Bunchberry is common in coniferous forests in northern Minnesota, but it also grows in swamps. It is a low-growing plant, and doesn't compete well with taller aggressive species. It prefers somewhat sterile, mossy soil, either moist or dry, typically sandy, rocky or peaty.
